LOL. i've calmed down now :) Mind you, we are THAT DRY here ATM, that people are saving water form their Aircon drains (ive seen this domestic and commercial) to water pot plants.

IMHO councils don't care much for petitions, but national TV coverage..........now thats different! As corny and biased that shows like todaytonight are, they do make main stream things like that.

It's times when I hear of others continuing dryness that I realise how blessed I am living in this special piece of paradise....

Even when NSW was 98% drought declared the South Coast was the only area (relatively) unaffected.....

So again now... we've been receiving 10 - 20mm of rain fairly consistently every second or third day (well usually night) for about the last month.

The local area is a very picturesque green veldt.... just a lush carpet....

There's something about this area that justs seems to attract any rainfall systems that are around....

Just perfectly postitioned under the prevailing jet stream flows that swing down from central oz and the fronts that swing over SA/VIC and across us....

Or the systems that swing past Tassie and suck the upper level lows down and out to sea over the South Coast.....

This area is blessed for sure....

The current pattern is IMHO another indication of a return to "normality" and reinforces my belief that this winter & spring the wheat belt and other farmers will see a significant breaking of the drought.... here's hoping I'm right.

Ah Rupert! Sounds like the perfect site for the next dam ...

I've heard from one local councilor that for every one letter that is submitted, they must consider that it represents the existance of 100 citizens of similar views. They do make a difference. I have the feeling that the biggest problem is knowing who to send it to and what correct wording to use.

We have a dam at about 85% capcity and a fairly major flowing river...

NSW State government has plans for 150km of pipeline to suck it dry for Sydney use..... (well maybe not suck it dry, just drain it a lot... lol)

As a backup they plan to pump the deep water aquafiers (reserviors) on the Southern Highlands at Kangaloon to top up Sydney as well...

Short sighted bastards.... those aquafiers feed (underground) all the natural water systems, rivers, creeks, springs etc over the surrounding catchment area of several hundred kilometres through mostly heritage forest and barren ground reserves....

God only knows what environmental damage they will do over a vast area for years to come....

Roz,
Here in WA the govt is about to start sucking water out of the yarragadee aquifer (underground water supply to much of the south west of wa) to supply to Perth. They admit that they don't even know if it will be environmentally friendly and will switch it off if it doesn't work (likely story) but somehow they still have EPA approval.

I think that Brian Burke must have had something to do with getting it approved!!!

Anyway you will soon see what environmental damage is done to an area when water is sucked up on a large scale.

C1 surely you must have some comments on the topic.

There are a LOT of wineries that use ground water..
you think they have a dam, well it is a hole in the ground into which they pump night and day to fill it. never actually happens...GGGrrr!!!

I thought dams fill with runoff. Don't get me started.

Aquafiers are a bit like old growth forests IMHO.... they are age old backup systems that provide flow to areas when times are tough ie in drought..... like thousands of little capillaries....

A bit like the Great Artisian Basin... another system which has been bleed dry and siphoned off for years.... which, although disputed, is believed to ultimately work it's way back underground to the Murray system.... look what's happened there when we've been subjected to severe and prolonged drought...

The backup supply is no longer available and rivers have stopped flowing for the first time in years...

Thankfully this years wet up north has resulted in water flowing into Lake Eyre for the first time in over 5 years....hopefully some of the reservoirs along the system will at least be somewhat replenished

No real studies have been done yet we're prepared to pump water from aquafiers kilometres to satisfied short term political gain.....

The stupid part is this... a major user of town water supply is either water that is utilised by industry or water used to maintain parks and gardens etc....

All of which could be substituted with recycled potable water from sewerage plants.... leaving the drinking water supply for .... drinking

Here in Redlands, they want to start taking frm Stradbroke Island's dam - it's doing fine serving redlands, but if they speed up the use from it, it'll fill with salt water and be useless to us all...

why don't they just catch and purify our storm water runnoff?
