you couldnt pay me enough to go for number 5 - (and hubby says it would have to be a miraculous conception) but unfortunately the lure of a one off lump sum payment is getting some youngsters in to trouble

I was happy with the 2 we have, and told heather so. She was a bit quiet that night, and I noticed her upset later on. What's wrong, I asked, When you told me you wanted a vasectomy my heart broke, was her reply. Now number 3 is due in 9 weeks  And I must book that vasectomy!

People keep asking us when we're having more babies. I just answer, "Not this week"
There are so many reasons for us not to have any more, but one of them is that we've got our population replacement babies, Earth doesn't need any more.
I like to think of myself as intelligent, so I hope the children will be too, but because I am intelligent, I don't need to keep breeding just for the sake of it, or for the economy.

Good answer Jaymie - having been thru the teens with 2 and going thru it now with the other 2 - Im not sure my nerves would have handled any more, I have 4 great kids who are happy healthy and have a great respect for themselves and the world they live in but they can still give you some nervous moments!!

I can totally respect that Jaymie. Replacing each person & no more... I'm heading more extreme; no kids at all for me (though I might adopt if the baby bug ever hits me). We have enough people around & about, I don't think I need to add to us. (I really can't imagine more of me running around, that's just freaky)

But population control isn't going to do it alone either... again, it's a whole paradigm shift that's needed.

Being Devil's advocate on one thing here: Natural disasters also happen in (relatively) uninhabited places, it's just that there are not enough people for it to get reported.. or else, it's not considered 'news' enough to be reported. 10 years ago, big disasters in far off China weren't reported & those often killed many many people..

Nice thread. I read notes on a recent (95) global summit where a return to village economy was a predominant theme. This consisted of people making as much as possible locally to reduce transportation and packaging, food in micro intensive farms within urban areas, utilisation of bio-fuel and several other sustainable things I liked the idea of.

When I read this document I thought to myself of the medieval ages and their village economies and cut off ignorance, but we have the internet. We are now more a global entity as people than ever before. Nothing need be lost all because our food and clothing don't travel 1000 miles.

Bio-digestion can help ease the energy/fuel problem. It's a start. It will provide fuel or power, and fertiliser, several byproducts, slow greenhouse gas emissions and relieve soil depletion somewhat if fertiliser is returned locally. Moving parts of industry to bio-diesel first would be a bold Govt stroke. Bells would go off in industry everywhere. Forcing big money investment into technology.

Cars really are a problem, everybody wants one. I haven't owned a car in years but I'm central city, and when I get the business running I'll likely 'need' one again.

I found some of Ted Trainers articles very fascinating reading.

http://socialwork.arts.unsw.edu.au/tsw/

I went to see An Inconvenient Truth and took my wife and daughter (14) to educate them on the situation. I work for Ergon Energy and they sponsored a session with the CEO and all senior managers attending aimed at encouraging a new way of thinking within our part of the energy industry. It was a really good night.

Well said mate!

My only critisim of the movie (Inconvenient truth) was that Al does not focus enough on slowing the population growth or "God" forbid going in reverse.

I am not just preaching this shit either, my entire life is now based around the shift from the "civilised society" that I was born in to a completely sustainable and carbon neutral life. I can only afford to live in a shed to do it, but it feels better than anything I have ever done in my life. Make changes today it has benifits that are so broad that it gets beyond the level that I comprehend.

There is a great article on cars that run on water in New Scientist July 2006, page 35. I wont go into detail, but its worth the read.

See ya

HG

Seriously, you you guys think the world is over populated, or just over populated with dumb people?

I do not pretned to know or even guess the maximum sustainable population of the planet, but what i DO believe is that th term "sustainable population" is RELATIVE...................i don't think that stop breeding is a solution. Perhaps stop breeding fools................

Going to agree with purrsikat on this! I dont have rugrats and probably never will? But this is not to say I dislike them and think others shouldnt have them if they think it is necessary! The thing I worry about is where the future will take them,Global warming,War,STDs,Drugs and a myriad of other things that are just NASTY!!!!
I am not saying that the world is a bad place to raise your offspring! I`m just trying to get across the fact that people should put more thought into what they are doing with the young lives they impression upon!!!
