VB, Yes, there needs to be others that learn how to have many sorts of localised food production. Even though Florida is surrounded by water we go through drought times which makes AP a much better way of growing some food. I really don't know of a solution to the food problems, but at least we are learning so we can teach others.

VB, My dirt garden is way sad this year but we joined a CSA and we get our produce from our friendly local farmer that way.

One part of a permaculture scheme!

I'm actually going in to meet with some people from this group called ecoaction (http://www.ecoaction.com.au) who are doing a permaculture patch at the ANU (Australian National University) to try and get them (or help them) to do a aquaponics set up. While you're at the site, check out the permaculture link (http://www.ecoaction.com.au/category.php?id=43) - they managed to grow stuff in the desert!

First time I have seen this video. Very good and shows what can be done.
Have they done any thing like this since?

That video is Geoff Lawton, talking about a project that he did a while ago.. Geoff is a legendary permaculture guy, who with his wife Nadia, runs the Permaculture Resource Institute. http://www.permaculture.org.au/index.php Lots of great info here....

They also have the best permaculture discussion forum http://forums.permaculture.org.au/
