Watched a bit about this on the news tonight.

What are your thought about scientists and doctors using our genetics to personalise our treatments and look for future medical conditions we might develop?

Its interesting stuff but there is always two sides of the coin. What if employers use this information to aid decision whether you should be hired or not? Or what about insurance companies?

Where do you stand on this?

I personally wouldn't give them any samples or info, if the doctors are really so interested in helping people then why aren't they looking at the time span (since around 1985) when many people started becoming obese and the diseases that can be attributed to that, not to mention the rise in other illnesses that seem to have developed around the time when processed foods became mainstream. It seems to me that going backwards in the way we eat and live is the only real way forward. I might be a bit of a skeptic but can you imagine what would happen if pharmaceutical companies got their corporate hands on that info, Billions more to be made from keeping people sick. Scientists I would think would have good intentions, most doctors as well, pharmaceutical companies...yeah right!!

I think in the next twenty to fifty years most of the treatments for our ailments will be

genetically patient specific.








I think insurance companies will be lining up at your door. Basically people with a genetic

anomaly will be the only people taking out insurance.

as for employers not hiring you, at the moment people only stay with an employer for 4-5 years

before moving on. genetics will not be that important in such a short time frame.

Genetic problems manifest more in older age, but employers are not employing older workers now

so what will be the difference?

Genetic info is so easy to get, that it is likely impossible to prevent people from getting the info. That being said, people think that what is in your DNA is set in stone, but the way genes express themselves is variable. It is possible to up regulate and down regulate genes. That means that genes that contribute to longevity can be up regulated, so people can have an active healthy life later than before, likewise, the genes that contribute to things like diabetes can be down regulated. While I think that Gattaca was one of the best films to come out of the nineties, it was based on an outdated understanding of genetics.
