I fantasize about a good camera all the time. Here in the U.S., because I have a Costco membership... I can get a Nikkon dual lens set for $800 U.S.

The Cannon, strangely, has a lower megapixel, and a slower fast shutter speed. While I get the 'don't put it on automatic'... We've got three toddlers, and three speedy youth, and a pre-teen... my sweet little cheapie loses a lot of what MIGHT have been great shots to agonizingly slow shutter speed.

I love taking shots of my flowers... and if I had a macro, I have all manner of small critters I'd love to catch. We'll see... I have an influx of cash due in July... which should also be my structure of the actual system build... and I may do the purchase for multiple reasons. I teach writing (well... I will, when I get hired again) and images that are blown out help kids without a 'writerly eye'... that is actually much like an artist's eye... to begin to see what they write about.

A 24 mega-pixel shot will have greater clarity... so, even a picture of a garbage can with a good camera gives a more vivid sense of color, reflection, depth of field, focus, and 'background'... So-- I'm sorry- the thing is both a personal toy, and a learning tool!!!

More mega pixel doesn't mean greater clarity, it just means the photos have more information and are larger.
It is just as easy to take blurry photos with a 24mp camera as a 4mp camera.
A Nikon D4 is 16mp and it's the top of the range.
Unless you are blowing prints up to large canvases, you will be shrinking your photos anyway.

Most photos are shrunk down to 800x600 when uploaded. That makes them less than 0.5MP. They can still be extremely clear.

A lot depends on post processing too... every shot can be made better either by raw processing or photoshop.

This time last year, I also had no idea about cameras but needed one to take on a 2 month USA trip. I wanted a better camera than your standard point and shoots but something light for travelling. A friend recommended me the Olympus OMD EM5. It was 2 days before leaving so I didn't have much time to research and bought one at Gerry Gibbs camera house. The camera only just came out and didn't have many reviews about it.
Little did I know that this small camera packs a huge punch. I am VERY glad I didn't go the usual Canikon DSLR route. People seem to have this sort of "camera blinkers" that if you don't have a Canon or Nikon DSLR then your camera is crap. Not to mention the "sensor arrogance" the bigger the sensor then obviously the picture will be better
A year later and the EM5 is being compared to enthusiast DSLRs like the Canon 7D or even the 5D. Pretty amazing it even took out camera of the year at dpreview (infuriating the Canikon fanboys).

For anyone out there thinking only DSLRS take good pictures... open your eyes and think again.
Mirrorless is the future!!!

Hi,

I was looking for an camera that can go underwater. I thought an 'action cam' would suit my needs. Some good reviews can be found at:

http://www.techmoan.com/blog/category/action-cameras

Initially, I was looking at getting a cheap (below 100 GBP) one. Then I pushed the boat out a bit - and was looking at either a GoPro Hero 3 or a Sony HDR-AS15.

However, this PR disaster from GoPro sort of made up my mind:

http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/20/run-dmca/

I've ordered the Sony HDR-AS15. I know it has its faults as a product, but I got it at quite a good price (165.99 GBP) at:

http://www.eglobaldigitalstore.co.uk/so ... -sale.html

I've ordered the replacement door with the flat screen - for better underwater filming:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0952250762

It's expensive at 39.99 GBP - but since I made the saving on the action cam itself I thought why not.

Ordered myself a 32G Class 10 SD card too:

Looking forward to using it!

Cheers,

Mon

Pity about the GoPro PR disaster ....

They really are a great camera for underwater work.... and so versatile for action sports....

Hope the Sony meets your needs....

Please... I think GoPro was not in the wrong, the website in question probably skewed GoPro's intentions on purpose. BYAP often has to do the very same thing to protect their copyrighted materials too. I think they just had to do it with the protected agriculture conference website this week...

Hi,

A DMCA is for copyright material. The order was talking about trademarks and seemed to refer to the review page and not the product page.

I understand that it is not about the review itself and GoPro did not like the fact that the website was not an unauthorised reseller - but that in itself is not illegal, as far as I'm aware.

GoPro just went about it the wrong way and just dug themselves in a hole.

Streisand Effect!

Cheers,

Mon
