I was told it is illegal to have a battery system hooked to the grid?

No not illegal. However it has to be configured so that when it is running on battery power it does not feed back into the grid.

You have an automatic switch that isolated the house first from the grid before it generates any power from the batteries. Achieving that and the extra paperwork to get it approved is why a lot of solar installers will not touch it.

4 x 6v 240ah batteries should give you 5.76KWh of power. :) wish i could buy some. :)

From Here! - can you explain how you get to 5.76KWh? I was planning on feeding them with 2 x 225W soar panels at 12V...
