After it does its count try hitting the F1 key. You need to download bios from HP for that machine. May have had some components changed and needs to reconfigure bios.

No, you need to do a windows re-install most likely. Try choosing the 'safe mode' option and see if that gets you to windows.

Sorry, guys, I dealt with this for a cousin a few days ago....if this is an HP with an AMD processor rather than Intel you should be able to fix it in five minutes. The fault comes from the fact that they set it up for an intel processor and when someone installs SP3 the thing goes into endless reboot. You can either do a clean windows install (with a windows disk, not the image/recovery thing that came with the computer and is on the hard drive) or boot in safe mode and go through the registry (use regedit, make a backup copy, then search and destroy!) and expunge all references to intelppm.sys. That should do it! My cousin lost all data and had the computer "fixed", then I came along and installed the updates and crashed it again ( ) and found the issue details online...mostly.

Note: if this is not an AMD processor HP desktop, none of this applies!

Good luck!

Found it in the dump! Sweet!

If you need detailed instructions I can pm or post them....

If that indeed is the case... then yep the fix is easy...

Open "regedit"... navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm\start\"

And set the value (which will probably be "1") to "0x4" (Hex... that's a zero by the way)...

Reboot as normal....

No need to delete any other key values...

SP3 is mostly for Microsoft benefit anyway. It has all the "is this a genuine legal copy of windows" software in it. Some legit antiviral stuff and patches but a good antivirus program is still needed.
But yes..Good find!!!

Hey, that is simpler and more precise than my "hack and chop" method. But mine helps work out aggressions... *grin*

You can tell an old dos man. I started when the first 486's came out. Wish I could have gotten some of those basics.

Hell... I still have my original 8086...

And working models of 286/386/486... and all subsequent editions of Pentium.... and versions of DOS and Windows...

As well as an Atari,or was it an early Mac... with an external windows emulation box...

And a couple of working (still) Alphaservers running VMS.... still the best operating system ever written... and still current and up to date with the latest release...
