Hi people,

Is anyone here a registered recycler or know how to become one? (in Aus. that is )

The reason I ask is I have a friend who's company can sell me IBC's direct and quite cheap but for legal reasons I have to be a registered recycler. They will have only had acidic acid (vinigar essentially) in them, but understand they're just covering their backsides. I've been in touch with my local council and now waiting to hear back. But judging by the reponse I've got from the 2 people I've asked I'm not all that confident I'll get an exact answer! Any ideas are always a help, thanks Taz.

See if you can find a not for profit charity. They are registered, get them to buy the IBC's for you and give them a donation. Usually companies will sell (or even give to charities) without a problem as they have a number to put on their books. Oh and point out its for reuse not recycling that always confuses them.
BTW never heard of a registered recycler unless it just means an ABN.

Thanks yeah your right. They called me back and had no idea!!
I'm just going to call the factory up and say I've got an ABN (which I do) and see if that will do. Otherwise thanks for the tip I might try the charitie idea. Taz

Hey Taz, I don't know how relevent this is to you "Down Under" but here in the U.S. the term "registered recylcer" has more to do with the issues of hazardous materials and local planning and zoning than anything else. Over here if you are wanting to just recycle used containers which had not been used for hazardous materials you would probably only need a local business license as a "scrap dealer" or "general merchandise". If you wanted to recycle things which might be or had contained hazardous materials then you would have to also obtain permits from the federal and state Environmental Protection Agencies. Since the IBC's you want did not contain hazardous materials (or in quantities sufficient to be classified as hazardous) you would probably only need a local business license (general merchant, etc.) in order to get them. (Most of it boils down to taxing the sale; if the seller does not have a general business license, they can not sell directly to a customer who does not have a taxation number [business license]).
