did you know that some cultures used to (and still do) eat the placenta? its said to be great for recovering and helps prevent post natal depression. there are probably all sorts of hormones in there as well. i'm not sure as i haven't fully researched it.

i made up some placenta capsules for my wife for this reason. sure i'm weird but it can't do any harm. if it does happen to work, even placebo then its a darn good thing.
I've seen (on TV) deer or gazelle or whatever giving birth to a young in the African grassland and then licking its young. I think its the placenta - I think nature says you must lick it ! (Maybe the mom could have licked her child - it may help the child feel good and also maybe prevent depression and stuff...as you suggested)

This may be silly, I hope no offense is taken...

And remember - the deer is vegetarian! There must be a really good reason to lick the placenta (or maybe it was just to help clean the young but its most likely like what bio-farmer said :? )

These are some important things a child needs: (completely my own ideas - in fact I may be unqualified to give it cause I'm only 21 but I like to help)

* Confidence - never destroy it by saying too many 'no's. Always explain why you say a 'no'. Children are not as dumb as you think, give them valid reasons, simple explainations
* Respect them quite as much as adults - but treat them as specially abled adults (can't walk yet.. brain developing, etc) Never treat them like naughty monkeys or they might became one :cyclopsani:
* Let them explore, be free, don't destroy the little scientist that every child is born as by saying curiosity kills the cat. What are you there for - supervise (without much intervention - stand aside and supervise)
* Get compassion into them (that lasts their whole life) by giving to them yourself first - Hug them, keep them physically close, secure when necessary... Don't punish them too much like they were a soft emotional punching bag. Forgive and that has the same / better effects than punishing them (not saying you raise a spoilt child, you forgive them when they sincerely make ignorant mistakes and explain why its wrong briefly) - don't treat them like they are a burden (oh yes they may be but its always worth taking extra effort to give children the raising they need.)
* Let them alone, their are not a part of your body they are individuals
* Don't let them too alone hehe, be beside them.

Congratulations on the birth of Penelope BF & Mrs BF. :D Great news that all went well and as you wanted it to.
Trust you make it through the next little while of sleepless nights.

One thing my sister told me when we became parents was that everything only lasts for a season (and, of course, one season follows another). You just have to hang in there and enjoy each season for what its worth and remember a new season is coming.
