Hey all,anyone doing any marroning this year when the season opens.hope it's another good one

I might have to put it on my list of things to do! I have caught yabbies from a dam, but never been marronning! When and where is the right time?

Was it a good one recently Dingo? I haven;t been in years, gave up years ago after catching nothing except a couple of under size ones... Having to stake your section of water so that others didn;t fish your space, seeing old sausages and chops in the water, old piles of chook pellets still there from previous nights/people fishing... Was all just a bit yuck and a waste of time..

Guess you have to know a good spot perhaps rather than just going to one of the dams.

Hey Faye,anyone will tell you night time is best, however I still catch quite a few during the day and find drop nets during the day and snare at night.yeah Joel it is a shame I see that at some places aswell but don't even go near the big dams because of them issues.cheers

I never Marron at night , only daytime in a river . Using dropnets in the deeper sections .

Have to say tho I reckon this year will be a toughie . I've just come back from a week of Tout/Redfin fishing down south and the river / streams are not in good shape. Mostly just puddles of very dirty water . The very few pieces of relatively clear water had lots of evidence of poaching .
The big problem with this year will not be felt till next year tho I think . People will still go to their fave spots on their secret river , get Marron and say look no problem there are still plenty , but with the water level and quality so bad taking out the same catch level as previous years and then expecting them to recover for next year is pie in the sky stuff IMO.
Time will tell I suppose but I think we are looking down the barrel of a few years of no Marron season (as has happened in the past) to allow them to recover .

Yeah prawnz I agree to a certain degree as my favorite little spot not too far from where I grew up is less than a metro deep and 5 years later,not flash not even worth the drive.however the poachers in my opinion with the lower water levels will kill this for all of us. And it is only going to get worse look at that bloke from Harvey dam 95 maroon and 68 undersize.wot a unit
