I went fishing last night down Kwinana way here in Perth and caught the most amazing bag of mixed fish.

Sand whiting
King George whiting
skippy
herring
baby Snapper
flounder
Tailor
port jackson shark
shovel nose shark
and one unidentified fish

An amazing evening fishing, dead still, the ocean was glassy and we could see lightning storms over the north and east of Perth... Most of the fish were quite small, though the sharks were a bit of fun at about 3-5 kg, really tested out my new rod.

All this in the middle of a suburban industrial area, fishing from a jetty that had lights on it, watching gardie and herring in the water swimming under the lights next to the jetty. The bites didn't stop the whole afternoon/night fishing and with very light flick rods the small fish were great fun, even one of the port jackson sharks was caught on the light rod.

The other sharks were caught on the bigger rod that was set off to one side with a large fresh bait and the drag set waiting, while we fished with the little rods.

Anyone else enjoy fishing?? I'm imagining that there must be a few of you out there. Had any luck lately?? Maybe if there's a few people we could have a subsection under fish for fishing stories..

I'm planning on heading south in a week or two chasing salmon. Salmon season in W.A. is a bit of a big thing for many W.A. fishing people, they are great fun catching 3-5kg tough fighting fish, and often when they are on the run, you can be catching them one after another...

This is an Australian salmon for those that don;t know them..

Did you eat the salmon?

Many people have bad memories eating salmon in that the flesh is pretty coarse and dry. I did too until I beer battered the fillets cut into small pieces. Really nice. Even my fussy kids eat it.

Salmon is fine... just needs to be bled immediately, kept moist.... and eaten that day or the next...

Unfortunately that was not something I caught last night, that was just a random picture of a salmon...

Yeah, many people don't like salmon much, I used to smoke a lot of it when I lived down south, it's beautiful smoked. I read something recently that said to make sure you cook it very quickly, and of course bleed and gut asap when you catch them..

Here's a sight to bring tears to the eyes of a fishing person.. Bins of salmon left sitting in a car park, in the sun.. Destined for pet feed....

That is so wrong.

I recommend reading The Last Fish Tale by Mark Kurlansky. Interesting stuff and I saw him speak at the Perth Writers Festival a couple of years back and it was pretty good.

Certainly better than the fish we can catch in Central Australia
Perhaps it would be useful to see a photo of the unidentified fish, from my experience there are some pretty keen fisho's on the forum.
And I have to ask why do you go fishing?

.....and they probably sold for only 50 cents a kilo. Would get much more from the sport and recreational fisherpeople for these. They're a great fish to catch.

Yep Rupe, always bleed and gut. I reckon that's a good method for any fish......and the ike jime!

Mmmm - I don't like the flavour at all - but then again I do like fresh mullet which a lot of people think is crap fish too - go figure :dontknow:

I love fishing as do the kids. I just bought a little runabout boat and am going to get it wet this weekend and over on the yorke peninsula next weekend so will report back with my catch :headbang:

Dunno as yet C1... Probably down the other way, to Denmark, visit my old lady while I'm there and kill two birds with one stone. She's still upset I didn't make it down at Chrissie.. :support:

Why go fishing? I don't fish to get food to eat so much, I fish because I love it.... Sitting back there on the jetty last night catching the small fish on the little rods with light line was a thrill, especially when there was so much variety... Then when you hear the Alvey real on the big rod start to make it's slow clicking sound as something is nibbling on the bait pulling the line out. Then it's a mad rush as you drop the little rod and run over to the big rod, pick it up, jam the ratchet on and lean back. Feeling the rod bend and the line go tight as the fish on the end starts to make a run for it, the drag starts screaming as the line is pulled from the reel.... And that's just the start of the fun.... Ahhhhhhhhhhh.... :headbang: :D

Coool a boat Stu... What size? My mate is looking at getting a tinnie at the moment.

One of my best catches... a 6lb 2oz bream... 2.7kg...

Caught at Evans Head about 1985... last cast of the day... was actually cleaning the rest of the catch when the alvey started running... and so did I... and everyone else... :wink:

2.7 kilo bream! Gee that's good. Lucky to see them over a kilo these days :(

My best trophy was a 20 kg spanish mackeral I caught off St Bees Island near Mackay. When I finally had it in, I was jumping around like a lunatic with excitement. Fish do strange things to me :drunken:
