This time we had the mates brother, the brothers son and mates old man so we had 50 nets. Got three times the amount we got Wednesday. Epic day with 40C heat and heaps of yabbies.
The two old blokes sorting them out for the boiler:

My lot after the boys took an overflowing butchers tub. Already peeled what would not fit in the vegie crisper. Sorry about the hairy knee :D

One of my favourite ways to have yabbies is to get the big blokes, cut them in half from top to bottom, quickly clean out the guts, put them on a baking tray flesh up, top with a garlic breadcrumb mix, put under the grill.

The butter in the breadcrumbs takes on the garlic and flavous the flesh. You can scoop out the flesh, and you get the contrast of the crispy crumbs with the softness of the yabbie flesh.

YUM.

HaHa, I actually like whitebait much to my daughters horror, but yabbie guts is the end point of where I will go.
I have seen what some people use as bait, and I wouldnt want to ingest that from a yabbie that had ingested it :drunken:

Returned to the lake again today, on my own as mates were fishing in the Horsham fishing comp or showing off hotrods in a car show.
Just me and my nine dropnets but came home with a good lot, and some nice biggies as well :D

Was thinking of Wazzas recipe above and decided to use bits of it as the yabbies were already peeled, so I put a layer of yabbies in a glass casserole dish lid, poured over a thick white sauce and then bread crumbs, freshly crumbed and tossed with melted butter and garlic. Under the griller for a few minutes and yum

Sounds really nice Mantis, my favourite way to have yabbies/koonacs is to get a tub of whipping cream, 6 cloves of garlic chopped rough and a few pinches of salt put into a microwaveable bowl large enough so it doesn't boil over and cooked down till the cream just starts to seperate, then remove and whisk n cook again until it starts to seperate again then dip yabbie tails in and eat warm, its very nice to make yabbie sandwiches with!!!!! (if you let cream mix go cold it turns into garlic butter)

A year on and the yabbies have started to move again in some of the lakes. And one good thing is the lake I got these from is only 8km from Horsham. I tried this lake 6 weeks ago and got not a yabby, then I heard a rumour on facebook and a lady at a local take away told me her friends got heaps here, so I knocked off early (as you do in a situation like this ), and got a nice haul of some very big yabbies in less than two hours.
Also heard that other lakes that have been very slow so far are starting to take off, so all is looking good on the yabby front :D
