..
The thing that irks me with AP, is the fight we have between plant choice and pH ( and even salinity..) :dontknow:

It would be good to be able to group useful plants by their pH preferences. :thumbright:

I wonder if anyone has made a study of what plants do well under LOW pH and HIGH pH, and then perhaps , how they tolerate salt..

eg.. I would like to simply grow all plants that do well in high pH in one system and low pH in another..

Anyone know of a stand-our reference..??

hi Bui
here's a couple.

low ph veg's, http://www.offthegridnews.com/survival- ... idic-soil/

ph preferences of plants, http://lazycompost.com/pH.shtml

here's a good one, http://www.harvesttotable.com/2013/12/v ... olerances/

Thanks for the leads - Looking at them now :headbang:

Peter

PS - yes - that is what I wanted.. a LIST that can be used to pick what you like for a given pH condition..

AND as a PS - for those who like the idea of having SALT.. it would be good to duplicate, but with "Salt Tolerance" included..

I doubt that the the average horticultural info would consider SALT as being a desirable inclusion.. :-(

Found one page Bui but it wont let me copy&paste:

HIGH TOLERANCE OF SALT in order down to moderate
Garden Beets
Asparagus
Spinach
MODERATE TOLERANCE in order down to very low tolerance
Tomato
Broccoli
Cabbage
Sweet Corn
Potato
VERY LOW TOLERANCE in order down to LEAST TOLERANT
Carrots
Onions
Strawberries
Peas
Beans

heres a great one. trying to attach it....grrrrr
now........can someone explain to me what ive added---- lmao.........
Threshold dS/m Slope ??????

my hourly rate is fairly high Bui, best I stop helping you or the good wife may send you an invoice. :wave1:

OK - gone through that data and produced an XL summary..
What the best way to include an XL spread Sheet..??

only 2 things needed to get a good spread sheet Bui.
sorry, only one thing ..(you already have the data)
the other is patience adding it to excel, one cell at a time.
I reckon your idea is a cracka, I'm thinking of doing something like that as well.
I have the AZZcardfile on pc.. its like a digital Rollerdex, well, no its not.! it IS a digital Rollerdex

Spent a deal of the day collating and entering.. it's all done.. just need to present it and copy and paste stuffs up with spacing..

I'm not sure I'll pay too much attention that that chart- celery does well at 3ppt salinity, as do spinach/chard, cabbage, cauli and broccoli, yet they are listed as moderately sensitive. Onion is listed as sensitive, but I know spring onions do very well at 3ppt too. I've also had peas doing well at 2.5>1.5ppt, although they are listed as sensitive in the chart.

S/m is conductivity - siemens per metre

(not a bad read)

it makes a bit more sense after reading that why so many people are getting different results from the same salt levels, it seems there are huge amount of variables to consider when trying to pinpoint the effects that salt has on individual plant species.

Gunagulla, do you know if this "conductivity - seimens per metre.?" can be converted to ppt .?

I suspect only under some circumstances Mudeye, because NaCl salinity is what we are interested in, but that isn't the only thing that affects conductivity.

That said, I have a meter which reads both salinity and conductivity, so I can record both for my system, where I know the main contributor to increased conductivity is the tens of kg of NaCl I've added, so I'll get a ball park figure for my system, but how much relationship variance there is between mine and others I couldn't say.

OK, just looked it up here: http://www.appslabs.com.au/salinity.htm and see that you multiply uS/cm by a factor of 0.51 to get salinity in ppm, for a pure NaCl solution. This appears to be close to what my meter uses internally.

I've just measured my big system
Conductivity 6230us/cm
*0.51 = 3177ppm = 3.18ppt.

The meter says the salinity is 3.23ppt, which is close enough, both round to 3.2ppt.

Well, it's a start

If anyone wants the XL spread sheet - PM me
If you have others to add to the list.. PM me

Likewise - if glaring mistakes - PM me :support:

you have been busy eh Bui.? looks like you do about as much work as I do.

you could add the salt tolerance by using coloured X's. red for sensitive, green for tolerant and so on......

good job...can't see my credit's anywhere, haven't you done them yet.? lol
