Aside from the usual edible veggies, if we chose to, is it also possible to grow roses, jasmines, hibiscus, orchids, and many more flowering shrubs? Would be lovely to enjoy their beauty and fragrance without much fertilizing or watering... Anyone grew ornamental plants with aquaponic? For the flowering plants, is there good chance they'll bloom more often than soil grown plants? ***I predict roses can be grown this way, their water requirements are the same as tomatoes so perhaps they can thrive?? what about orchids? do I have to shower them like how I always treat mine (they absorb nutrients via leaves as well) or just keep them in flood and drain system? |

I grew tulips once, only because I found them in the shed. They grew well. |

I've got lillies that my wife planted popping up nicely. I think most things that are smallish and shrubby will do quite nicely. |

WOW that's all nice! so basically the only thing we can't grow in aquaponic is succulent / desert plants! they'd drown their roots lol... or would they? if we're able to use a timer we can maybe just drench them every 3 days? how about orchids guys? anyone ever had success with orchids? |

I have had a cyclamen in there that had so many flowers you couldn't see the plant. It has naturalised in the bed. I got the plant when in hospital when I had my baby. Each year it is a beautiful reminder. They say to keep them dry through winter but its doing fine, even have baby plants surrounding it. |

Orchids would probably hate it. They usually grow on trees, and need more humidity than actual watering. Ive read that the right ornamentals work as great pest control for the veggies. I know that marigolds, lemon grass and citronella repel mosquitoes, and dill is supposed to repel tomato hornworms. That's all that is permanently registered in my brain at the moment. |

I tried Marigolds to attract bees, but they attracted spidermites and caused some issues so I removed them. |

I spoke from experience, they're soo lovely! |
