Post subject:  growing asparagus

I've search for asparagus growers here and can't really find anything. Is anyone growing asparagus and if not, why not? I've just planted three, three year old crowns. Am I nuts?

Forest - I grow it in my dirt garden but would not bother in AP. Are you talking about in AP - if so I will explain my reasons.

Can I assume you have grown in dirt before?

I have two words.....

Dormant period....

Post subject:

yes, but growers often lift their asparagus in the dormant period, couldn't you do that every year?

EB is correct. My main reason for not growing in AP is underutilisation of the bed space. You only harvest asparagus for a short period each year and the rest of the year it takes up piles of room - except for the month or 2 in Qld when it dies back altogether (the dormant period). In this dormant period it would probably have to be removed as it might rot. Either way - it is not a good use of bed space.

Of course you could just go ahead and do it, prove us all wrong.... After all, none of us have tried it, we're just theorising.... :)

ok, thanks VB. I have no idea how long a normal season would be for tomatoes, capsicum etc in AP, but they don't stay in forever, do they? How often are the common plants replaced? Do you think the asparagus would grow well if I did leave it in?

that is what I'll do, joel, but I'd like the info too.

Forest - all I knwo is that my ground asparagus take up piles of room. If I had that sort of room available in my AP I'd definitelly give them a run. Will look forward to seeing how you go :-).

I can't really coment on the "sparrows guts" as I've never even grown it in the ground.... I know friends who do (they call it sparrows guts), but I've just never got around to it myself..

ok, I'll leave them in and grow them so we all know. I'll report what happens. Yay!! I don't have to pull them out.
