I've noticed a lot of people planting marigolds, usually because of pest and disease resistance, and I did the same.. BUT, while looking up whether some seeds that were around my GB were from the marigold, I discovered why they are resistant.. The roots exude antibacterial thiophenes!!! (wherever they are) This apparently effects the bacterial nodules on the roots of beans and other legumes that do whatever fancy things they do with nitrates, and shouldn't be planted near them in a soil based garden, so I can only assume they shouldn't share the same AP water either.. Being antibacterial, they probably shouldn't be in AP water at all.. Does anyone know if it effects the ammonia bacteria? I would assume it does.. Either way, I've ripped mine out of the GB's and put them in a pot that i'll probably never remember to water.. |
