Be extremely cautious regarding the impotation of any plants or seeds into Australia...

Check with AQIS.... here's the link regarding importaion of Moringa plants... some varieties are prohibited !!!... others have conditions attached

Not having a go at you or anyone in particular Hamish... just that I think it's important that we regulate ourselves.... and abide by existing regulations...

Otherwise... we will be regulated... by DPI, AQIS, local councils etc etc....

To the point where it could become impossible for people to build/maintain backyard systems...

Hi Guys,
I'm up here in Port Macquarrie again, and I noticed a sign that said: Rare plants and poultry... Wow she had some cool looking birds, but aside from that...

I asked the lady if she had Moringa, she said no, but had had it before, and lost them over winter. She kept them in a hothouse and didn't know why they went. Anyhow she's happy to get some in for me, yet I'm flying up all the time so it's unlikely I can. For anybody who's interested though, perhaps those of you from Sydney who were looking for one and are prepared to drive a couple of hours...
Funny thing is, she asked what I wanted it for, and I said fish food: to which she instantaneously replied "For aquaponics?" I was gobsmacked. Well she's even heard of the Illustrious Joel over in Perth. I gave her the website, that unfortunately she was ignorant of, as she says she's very interested in the concept. So hopefully we'll hear from her and I can get a point on the recruitment board


The other thing the lovely lady brought my attention to was a white mulberry, which she says is quite rare in Aust. They're meant to have many of the same properties as Moringa, and are a cinch to grow. They fruit HEAPS for 4 -5 months per annum, and the leaves are loved as fodder for pigs goats etc. They have the advantage of being able to feed silk worms, which make a very good fish feed also. Apparently in china, they feed the fruit to fish in farms. Unsure of the leaves as yet. leaves and fruit are meant to have medicinal value as dewormers and general tonics for animals ingesting them.

Does anybody know of the White Mulberry and it's usefulness?

What? Better than replanting a 3 foot sapling? Really? they don't like being moved?

I have a white Mulberry in my backyard,, Fruit much larger than the normal red mulberry ( some around 8cm long) and MUCH MUCH sweeter. Ants love this fruit ,so you need sticky baits around the trunk.
The leaves are great for pigs/cows etc , never heard of them being fed to fish.
YEP silkworms LOVE them,,,if you put normal mulberry leaves and white ones in the box the white mulb leaves are first to dissapear.
Tree grows FAST,,mine is 2 years old ..... bought from daleys on line,,,its well over 4 metres tall and wide,,,,trunk probably 40cm around. Also it's a very attractive tree,,a beautiful weeping form.

I was meaning growing the moringa from seed works very well aparently. In spring.

OBO ,, once you've got a few Moringa ,, then just use branches for cuttings ,, stick them in the ground and they sprout like ....., sprout like Moringa:)

White mulberry, Morus alba is quite common
New to Aus is White Shahtoot (Morus macroura), got it last month from local B
also have a dwarf red Shahtoot (grafted ) from Diggers, got it free, last one, didn’t have name tag,
so just hope it’s not something else.

Is that the one with the big long white fruits Steve?
