I don't know about the non viable seeds on the thornless blackberry ,have a look at these,ones that came up last year are growing into normal looking plants.

I don't know about nonviable seeds on thorless blackberrys ,take alook at these.They are coming up like hairs on a cats back.

Oh, well I was told they were non-viable... they do run and spread like that, I've found that happening already... but it hasn;t fruited yet, so NFI if the seeds are viable.

My experience is that the thornless seeds are viable and will grow, but they are not a hybrid and so they have thorns. Do yours?

Last years didn't have thorns,if they are not a hybrid they should right.With a hybrid you can get anything ,you may not get two plants the same.

I still have no fruit... next year will tell.

To all of you with thorn-less blackberries: I feel kind of silly going into 2.5 meter bushes and going into the middle for the perfect blackberry in 30 degree C heat wearing sweatpants and a long tee-shirt. But hey, it's free. posting.php?mode=reply&f=47&t=8003#

related to raspberries, i have being growing thornless loganberries in my aquaponics system for about 3 seasons now ( 2 with fruit). loganberries are a cross between raspberries and blackberries.

cons: the large root system, the canes had grown to 8m long, they blocked out a lot of the light, left little nutrients for the other plants

PROs: hundreds of flowers, lots of berries, berries grown in the soil were dry but the aquaponics ones were always moist.

i have added two varieties of raspberries to my system (red and gold). you can not grow them in a media free environment. the roots have to be dark otherwise they will all turn into green growth and there will be no roots left. they are doing well, i got a fruit off the red one last week and it was very sweet and tasty.

i find that the berry bushes take up a lot of resources (space, nutrient) but the fruit is worth it. i have a major slug problem in my system but the berry bushes are don't have a problem with such things.

i think it doesn't matter what we put in our systems as long as it's not plants that like acidic conditions or are harmful to the fish.

i have a lot of permanent plants in my system because the fish have to have clean water 365 days a year, not just between crops.

i have the following in my system:
two types of advacado -small but growing, a mango-small but growing, a passionfriut -small but growing, 2 loganberries, 2 raspberries, Rosemary, sage, strawberries & i have a citrus, a tayberry and peach tree in pots that are getting water from the system.

i need a bigger backyard....
