if any one can help me get started it would be great. just set up my first aquaponics system. wanting to no the best plants to use in winter.

Hi RR, usually leafy greens work well. I have silver beet, peas, beens, bok chow, pak chow, tomato, celery, most herbs just to name a few. There is a web site that outlines what is in season for your area in oz but sorry I forget the name, try a google search and you should stumble across it.

It varies a bit from north to south but there is a good quick guide at the bottom of the IBC guide that you can download. There is a link to it on the home page here.

thanks all for all ur help. was getting worried last night that no one would reply. this is all new to me. never been on a forum or chat room till last night. thank again for any info. im from newcastle nsw. not much around for AP. trying to do it right the first time round. i have the system set up just need plants & fish

Takes a little while to get familiar with finding ur way round here RR but stick with us.
It's prolly a bit late to be planting winter crops now [cauli, broccoli etc] better starting spring vegies and these will depend on if you get frosts at your place. Let us know how it goes.

cheers again bushy. im hearing u. dont realy no what im doing but im trying and getting some good feed bak. was thinking it might have been a bit late for winter plants. im not much of a green thumb and dont want to waste time and money on planting the wrong stuff

Lettuce always a variety that you can plant no matter what time of year. At least where you live.

mint takes over systems so dont plant it

potatoes like to grow in your pipes and block everything so avoid them as well

If you cover your grow beds with small DIY greenhouses I would say late winter crop or just go spring crop

Yeah it was a beauty, just wish I had a few of them in the system, that one came out the Murray in Toc.
I've been hearing around the traps up here from "experts"(farmers) that we are in for an early Spring!!!!!! Bring it on I say, but don't give us a few weeks of sunshine then go back to being unbelievably cold again.

I know this is a bit of a long shot, but if you download the IBC of aquaponics, you'll get not only a good read about the basics of aquaponics, but at the back there a very simple planting calendar.

It's a big download 38 MB, but worth it..

Cheers bndybear and earthbound. Been great weather here the last few days. Keep the sun coming I say. Have found a garden calendar thanks. Not much of a grower so more research the better for me. Have done plenty of reading and watching vids on YouTube. Think I'm nilly ready to go. Happy with my system just abit unsure on plants and fish. Speaking of fish what is it bndybear have not looked close yet. Heaps of salmon here at moment.
