I dont know.. A few websites suggest digging the saffron bulbs up during their dormancy and air drying them if they have been planted in the dirt. Either storing them in layers of dry river sand or newspaper. Apparently you can do that for a lot of types of bulbs. But I don't have experience with bulbs of any type so I'm just going on what I've read.
I also understand they are native to a semi arid environment, Kashmir or Greece (according to Wikipedia). So being dry for a few months probably wont kill them.

Also after pricing the bulbs and realizing how small they are, I think I just make a pot or basket that I can dig into a bed instead of trying to fill a whole 1/2 blue barrel. I may have been a touch overambitious when I wrote that.

I can feel my interest in saffron growing.....

now theres something i didnt think about. mmmm sashimi with fresh wasabi. i can think of nothing better.

now just need to find someone who sells seeds.
