Hey All, I haven't started anything yet, just educating myself on the possibilities and trying to design a system for my yard. Seems to be lots of good information here and a great community atmosphere as well. I have a electro/mechanical background and have a few ideas that I may try to implement into my system. I will post my results as I can afford to purchase equipment. Besides Hunting and Fishing, I don't think that I have really FOUND my hobby until now... |

Hi guys and thanks for the great welcome! I am located in Deep South Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. Climate zone 9b I believe. I plan on building my AP sort of modular to where I can add to it as I can afford to. I have spent the last 20yrs working critical facilities maintenance, working and repairing anything from a 5000 btu window a/c unit up to very large water cooled / air cooled chillers. Most of the systems I worked with were all set up with alarms and monitored off site. I had to troubleshoot and repair all of the mechanical systems as well as the control systems. I also worked on above ground and below ground fuel storage tanks, emergency generators, transfer switches, lighting, sump pumps, septic systems, building alarm systems, fire control systems, roofing, plumbing, fencing, you name it lol.... I hope to add ideas into the AP arena in the future, I just need to get started and put things into perspective on the home front. I already have some pretty solid ideas to keeping tilapia and trout alive in there perspective kill months, but haven't drawn anything up yet. I will try to do so because I know that these situations are important to a lot of (get ready, I am getting ready to coin a name for us, just googled it and nothing came up so here goes...) "Aquaponists" wanting to keep fish year round. I will grow tilapia and channel cats to start with but will definitely have to come up with a solution to keeping the tilapia because we do have freezes and cold spells in my area every now and again. I will probably start my system thread soon, I don't have any gear but I can probably upload some pics of the area that I plan to work with. Anyways guys take care for now... |

Hea, Guano/Oldsalt sounds like ya can fix and/or build, about anything...... Tilapia should not be very hard to overwinter where you are at, just keep them warm over any cold snaps, and you got it for the rest of the year.... Channel Catfish would be a good choice for you as well........ Trout on the other hand, will be very hard to keep going for more than a couple of Mo in the dead of winter, without some major cooling system........ not that it cant be done, it's just gona cost a lot in Ele to keep them cool enough......
