Good question ,but i plan to keep Koi,,,just to look at ya see,and koi love clay it makes them shine , when you can see them ,trouble is Koi being carp feed off the bottom and ya can not see them ,so if i coverd most of the clay may be i could reduce disturbence but still have the benifit of the nutrients from the clay for the KOi,,,a cunning plan ,,,also the clay is totaly water proof ,what need for a liner??may be i could pump the water in to a seprate settleing tank ,,or may be just buy aliner ,,,thinks :dontknow:

also Koi poo like mad one of the main problems with keeping them is keeping the quality of the water ,,thats where the grow beds come in ,,,i hope ,,,feed the plants and clean the water one of the resons i was so pleased to find this site is it combines two things i like ,plants and fish ,some of the systems look complex but others are alot less so ,,,hmmm lots to lern first

I have a koi pond that is lined. Water is allways clear they have been in there for at least
8 years i have never had a problem.
All the good stuff grows on the liner.
No use having a pond if you cant see the fish :dontknow:
If you have a look at the (ellenbrook ape's) you will see my pipe system
that filters my pond i have only had that on the pond for a few weeks
and it works realy well :D

Redbeard is right I'd reckon, line the pond with plastic.

I'm wondering how long a pump is going to last with clay particles running through it, I know there are specialized pumps to do this but they are not cheap, and yes I think your bacteria would die if you shut down the system over winter, could you not find other fish like trout that do well over the cold spell? if your digging in another tank you could join the two together thus keeping your Koi in one and a productive fish in the other to keep the system running all year round.

Just some thoughts

Nice to see more people from Ireland here....... :wave1:

My brother set up a couple of little IBC systems over that way a while back http://mooregroup.wordpress.com/2008/10 ... cs-update/

They were hoping to expand things a lot but I think the economy over there has slowed things down a bit.. Best of luck Saltydog...

Thank you i shall take red beards advice and line the pond or use tanks ,,i never thought about two tanks ,and as for keeping the system running in winter ,if the fish are in slumber and i am not growing any thing ,becouse nothing will grow(i may well be wrong )could i run the system on areduced rate just to keep the bacteria alive?my main worry is freezing pipes.
