Hey BYAP,

I am a student at Loyola University of New Orleans and am about to embark on my first aquaponic system. My intentions are to, first, be successful at creating and maintaining the system. Second, I want to provide my home with fresh vegetables, herbs, and fish. Lastly, I want this system to be my model for future systems, where I can use the aquaponic system to produce fish on a commercial level.

Like any student with limited monetary funds, the start-up cost for my system is daunting. There is some pressure to put together a system as I have imagined but failed attempts will not stop me. The knowledge from this forum and my own pride, as I have told many of my endeavor, will lead me to success.

I am extremely excited to commence and to share my experience.

Stut,

Welcome!! Someone down your way that might be a big help is BRB (aka, batonrougebill). Look him up on this forum.

Certainly, the basics of AP can be learned on a small/scrounged system in a very cost effective manner. I would recommend looking at a barrelponics system as an inexpensive first 'go' that you can build in a weekend and have running for around $100 if you can scrounge a little. Free plans are available online if you go here.

That can get you started cycling and growing fish/veges while you gain experience and knowledge on the many different setup options. And.. it buys time while you scrounge... LOL!

Hope that helps... Oh, remember: We like pics!!

Hey Stute! curious as to what your planning for "your prove it to yourself system" The Barrel ponics system by travis Huey is one but as many of the guys on here have is the single or double IBC systems.
Use the search button and look thru the members systems for barrel ponics systems and the IBC systems. County boy has a real nice barrel system in his thread and there are several 1,2,and 3 IBC systems to look at to start giving you ideas. It sure will be nice to have another guy from south Loosieana within driving distance!
