Hello All, I found this forum a few months ago when my wife and I were planning to design an AP system for our family. I am nearing completion of our 500 gallon system and we are going to purchase the fish next weekend. This forum has been a wealth of information and I may be asking advice as I progress on my system. Although I think every question I have has been asked by someone else somewhere on the forum. Thanks again for all of your combined knowledge. |

One thing I have been puzzled about is why most all of the AP sites out there are mostly Australian. Any ideas of why it is just catching on in the US? And why is it so popular in AU. Or is my perception just off. |

The perception is not off, they do have it going on! I'm just guessing but I think part of it is it just works so well with water conservation. But just the nature of it really seams to connect more naturally with them. It may be just me but I think they are a whole generation ahead in conservation as a whole. I've been spending so many evenings learning from this forum. I'd be happy if just one more person from my State would join. |

Just out of curiosity, how did you find out about it, AP? |

Well at least the "real" people down under are onto a good thing. I understand that some of the powers that be and corporations there are still really stuck on coal power and other things that might not be so good for the world. Anyway, at least more and more of the "real" people here in the USA are finally catching on to the idea of growing one's own food. It may take a while since I know many people here have been brainwashed by the idea that things from a grocery store are somehow "clean and good" and anything that might have at one time been outside in the elements and/or dirt is scary. They just can't get the idea that most of the stuff in the grocery store was outside in the dirt. Welcome |

Welcome Phong. I live across the river from you in Vancouver. It's great to have others in the area trying this out. |

Matthew - I stumbled on to AP when I was researching hydroponics about 6 months ago. And I came to find out that what I was doing on a small scale was actually aquaponics and not hydroponics. My first system involved two kiddie pools, goldfish and plants. I think I found a few sites that involved huge systems and then I found this site and all was right in the world. (Imagine heavens opening up and angels singing.) Nocky - You and I need to to talk because one of my tanks in my system is going to have crayfish. And of course, beer is always good. Chappo - Chao Anh, khoe khong? Anh hieu tieng Viet? Actually I am not Vietnamese, I just have a lot of friends that are and so we learned Vietnamese so that they couldn't talk behind our backs. TCLynx - Thank you for the welcome and you are right, people get locked into an idea and think that is the only way to do things. I have been so far outside the box for so long, I don't even know where the box is. Healingdeva - We will have to trade notes on what does best in our area. Creative1 - You are a weird dude, but I like that in a person. BatonRouge Bill - Thanks for the welcome and your thoughts on why this is mainly a AU thing are very similar to mine. And the point that Aussies have it going on, well, I can't argue with that. |

Creative1 I was just looking at your system and was all sorts of impressed. I was wondering if you could have crayfish and trout in the same tank and you answered that question. Now I am trying to figure out where to get marrons in Oregon. |
