| Post subject: | Hi fromm Ti Tree NT |
Gday, My Name is Brendan and I live at Ti Tree which is 200ks North of Alice Springs in the NT. I love the taste of barra...and there is no goood source of barra here, basically i have to travel a long way to get it. So I \propose to set up an aquaponics system this summer so that next warmer season im ready for the fish, and maybe after that in the cooler months run trout. I will post some pics of the set up starting as soon as im off these damm crutches, |

I found 2 fish farms up darwin way, was going to ring them on monday and ask availability. Im pretty sure that it illegal to bring in live fish from interstate here, as far as i know you cant even get potting mix or dirt from interstate. So i think pretty much that i have top source them from the NT. Hopefully this shouldnt be a problem due to them being so many of them wild here. Some one here hopefully should be able to shed some light on the subject anyway. |

Hi Brendan, welcome to our obsession I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get a long enough season to grow trout through winter. You would have to have precise timing to get the biggest fingerlings at the start of cool weather and shovel the feed in. Here in Townsville we would prolly only get 4 months of nearly cold enough water temps. The barra should do well though. |

Well now that all i have heard is Barra Barra Barrra i think i will just stick with the original idea and get barra. Now just to source some , or just go for a long weekend fishing and bring back some live ones, dunno but the latter might be the easiest alternative. Unless I can find somewhere nearby that can get me nice size, from what i read id be better off to get 100mm or larger id just get less of them. rupertofOZ : jeez tennant, its a small world out there, I have good friends that have a farm in gezza on the way to berry lovely place. Hope the weather treating you well. |

You thinking about radiating heat away at night C1? Perhaps so he could have trout? or are you worried about maintaining heat for the barra throughout the night |

Nah it doesnt get cold in summer at night only in winter , have a look at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ ... 5643.shtml for averages , I think i should be fine over the warmer months any way. But i dont think i can do much over winter |

Its a baskerd of a climate for trout or barra....silvers and jades would probably be ok if you can keep the water below 30. If you can get barra in october, you have a very good growing season, but I cant see you being able to keep them over the 4 cold months without some expensive measure being taken. |
