Hello everyone. I'm Norman and I'm looking for aquaponic build references that my family and I could use to have our own self-sufficient garden. This is also something I want to do with my dad since he's looking for other ways to spend his time after retirement.

Hi Norman
Welcome to the forum
How much space do you have Aquaponic systems can be designed so expansion is easy
Best to build a basic system and learn how it all works
Ive found that its best to build a Green / Shadehouse first as managing our weather extremes is half the battle , eg savage heat , frost , wind ect ect
Start a thread in members systems to record your progress
Cheers Rob

Thank you for the kind welcome. We do have at least 20sqm of lot to start with. We're still doing some research and finance allocation for the equipment and materials needed.

Hello everyone. I am Hugh from the Southern Caribbean islands, Trinidad and Tobago. My system is out in the open... I have two fish tanks - 170 gals each and 80 square feet of grow beds using DWC floating raft system. Got some tilapia fingerlings 2 weeks ago and I am now seeking to repopulate my growing beds with some cherry tomatoes, chive, celery and basil and peppers.

The best advice I can offer a beginner is to keep it small and simple to start. There are many mistakes to be made and much to learn, so a small affordable system keeps the cost of mistakes to a minimum.

At most, I would recommend a single IBC fish tank with a solids lift overflow feeding 4 growbeds (~1/3 IBC, 12" deep media) and a minimum 100 gallon sump tank (1/2 IBC). If you start with sand then you don't need a solids filter. If you use gravel or hydroton then I recommend a Radial Flow Filter.

Get an API Freshwater Master test kit, and some clear ammonia for fish-less cycling.

The best reference manual out there is https://www.fao.org/3/i4021e/i4021e.pdf

Welcome and best of luck. Enjoy the journey and discovery!
