Hi,

new member here and very green when it comes 2 aquaponic. Bought a complete kit that's running inside my second living room , it's run by 2 LED lights from california lightwork. Solar extreme 250 and 500, did run into a issue where I lost rainbow trout but i'm hoping I can restart it soon again. my main question is how do i keep the fish bed clean when the trout were in they pooped so much there was a huge buildup in a matter of a day at the bottom which increased nitrites tru the roof .

current levels right now is :

PH: 7.4
Ammonia 0.5 ppm
Nitrite is hard to determine with api kit it's either 2 or 5 ppm
nitrate: around 10 ppm

So any tips to reduce my nitrite and tips for adding 5-10 gold fish to the system.

keep your feeding rates controlled with trout in a small system and use a fine net to scoop out any poo and uneaten food, though with goldfish you should be ok.

Just a short note for anyone reading this thread later who has the same issue. In a reply to a PM, I suggested salting with 1 part per thousand of NaCl (sodium chloride) that is not iodized or have anti-caking agents added (this helps the fish with nitrite poisoning, stress and building a slime coat). I also agree with regulating the feeding to reduce any spikes in nitrite or ammonia.

One thing I didn't mention in my PM is that if the fish have been exposed to high nitrite levels this damages the gills so upping the aeration may help some of the fish recover.
