We've recently set up an aquaponics system after my husband retired from a long career as a teacher. Although we're hoping we'll get some income to supplement teacher income, we're also enjoying our experiments with different kinds of plants. We have a greenhouse with media beds and two DWC beds, with white crappie and goldfish to provide the nutrients (we decided not to go with tilapia because it would be so expensive to heat the water in this climate where winter temps can dip into the 20s). Our system went online in November. We're still trying to work out the kinks, although we're starting to get some nice celery from the system. The greenhouse is also a good stress reliever, especially for me, since I haven't retired yet! All those pretty green plants and the peaceful sound of the running water...... Looking forward to learning more about aquaponics from this forum! |
