Hi, hoping on so I can hopefully learn and do research now before I start my own system. What I can say now is that I'd like to have a unit in my apartment which grows food similar to the photo posted. Looking to do this mostly for the animal that is yet to be decided. Talipia is the easier fish but I'd like a shellfish of some kind. Any plants grown would most likely be herbs. But yea, hi.

Welcome, where in the mitten are you? I'm just south of Lansing. If you decide to do something like the picture keep in mind you need room to be able to access the top of the tank to feed the fish and more importantly catch the fish when it comes time to harvest them. It doesn't look like they left themselves much room to get into the tank. If you decide to go with tilapia, depending on where in MI you are at I could probably hook you up with some blue tilapia. I am about to kick mine in the rear to get them breeding again, but I need to rearrange my fish room and reassemble my shelving unit for the tilapia fry rearing tanks so it might be another week or so before I really get going for my tilapia fry for this year. |

Actually over in Eaton Rapids, I come to Charlotte with family a lot for groceries. It'll be a while before I do any aquaponics though. Gotta get a vehicle and computer first. Was thinking of setting the tank up to be pulled out when harvesting fish but feeding wise, was going to have a gap big enough for a hand. |

Awesome glad to have someone close by - I am actually an Eaton rapids address but live in the country about half way between ER and Charlotte, grew up in Charlotte and work in Charlotte so still say I live in Charlotte. Once you get the car worked out you should swing by and visit I'll show you around my setup! |

In fact I have a group of people who are interested in learning more about aquaponics so if you are cool with them coming, we can plan something. |

Yeah I'm game as long as you don't mind a little mess. I'm in the middle of a bunch of projects and trying to get stuff ready for the garden but I don't mind if you want to stop by some time... This weekend and next are both pretty busy but could stop during the week one night or a weekend further out. I'm home about 430 pm every night except Wednesday this coming week. |

Hey guys, I'm new to aquaponics But I've got a decent grasp of the nitrogen cycle, and understand the importance of balancing the right amount of fish (producing ammonia) and the right amount of plants (consuming nitrates) My question is: is there a way to calculate the fish to plant ratio before even purchasing anything? Or is it more a kind of tweak as you go? (e.g. if the plant looks weak, it probably needs more nitrates, so feed the fish more often so that more ammonia is produced) I just want to make sure everything is okay before I get it going and have a fish die from something, because I don't have the correct fish/plant balance. I understand that's probably inevitable getting started, but I'd still like to take all precautio |
