hello everyone itsasmallfarmV2 here. (from saskatchewan canada)

just joined to asked some questions about the world of aquaponics, i always liked the idea but was limited to just raising trout before, turns out that my province now allows us to raise Nile tilapia with a permit. so now am considering raising them.

a bit about me, i raise chickens and ducks (i prefer raising ducks) for eggs and pets. am an avid fisherman and a hunter.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Good to see an other canadian here. Specially as we will be neighbours soon because I`m moving to Alberta next month.

I`m thinking of raising Tilapia as well, maybe I can grab some fingerlings from you :)

If you have pics and/or details about your system, I would love to see it in the "member`s system" section.

Welcome,

Tilapia will be a challenge anywhere in Canadia (sorry, I saw someone call it that on tv once and it's stuck). I can't recall seeing any threads about them here, there may well be, but here's a link to a thread by "Wendy in BC" over on the PAP forum, about the trials and tribulations of raising tilapia in Southern BC, close to US border.

http://www.aquaponics.net.au/forum/thre ... -new.1329/

It's a few years old now and the forum operating platform was changed a couple of years ago, which inadvertently deleted some people's posts right across the forum. All of Wendy's posts appear to be included in the thread, but occasionally you'll see a post that doesn't quite make sense, that's because the post prior to it has disappeared.

Over the years Wendy had a few good threads running about her systems, the Tilapia, heating, grow lighting etc, so if you use the search function you should be able to find them easy enough.

not really good to have lots of threads, just keep adding to this one. It the tells a story of your progress for anyone answering your various questions.

Thank you, I think I found him. $5 for a single baby tilapia?! OMG, it looks like I have to breed them myself after I bought a few from them.

A made a bit more research and I found a tilapia farm in Alberta, maybe I will contact them and grab some fish ( maybe adult ones ) from them once I start.

If you're in Alberta definitely better to get your fish in Alberta. Same with Saskatchewan. Gotta fill enough paperwork just to keep tilapia, once you decide to import them from out of province you have fill additional import papers.
