Hi all, New to the forum, and new to aquaponics. Basically looking to add aquaculture to my self-sustainability arsenal. Very interested in raising prawn(s) and Basa, and slightly interested in Tilapia. Anyone with any info, experience, or advice would be greatly welcomed to throw some knowledge my way. Thanks everyone! |

Hello and welcome to the forum! I had to look up what Basa was as I've never heard of it and the search turned up a marine type catfish in indochina? If you live in Indiana the only Indiana I know of is in the USA so I'm a bit confused? |

You can find these in the pet stores under different names (around here they are usually labeled as Pangasius catfish). The ones I've seen are grown in freshwater. Probably these are going to be grown inside considering their temperature needs and the needs of Tilapia and prawns. Pretty sure they'd die outside but they still might not be legal in an outdoor system. |

Okay, that clears it up a bit. I never really get fish from pet stores. I remember a couple months ago I was looking for a tank for some land Snails I bought and several betta fish were knocked over and water was spilled onto the floor. I feel like some kids just came through and tipped them but I just couldn't believe it. But I agree. As a native of Illinois with family in Indiana the temperatures will be too extreme for tilapia and prawns and I know Indiana has some stricter laws on what feels like everything these days so you may need a license or permit for prawns or tilapia. Not sure about the legality of the catfish but probably those too. Do you intend on raising the catfish and prawns in the same system as that seems detrimental to the prawns development? They are bottom feeders same as catfish and would compete for food I believe. |
