New to the forum and new to aquaponics. Hoping to get a sustainable setup going to provide my roommate and myself with low cost veggies, herbs and protein.

Looking at different options but am going to be starting off with a 10 gallon aquarium with an ebb and flow grow bed for herbs on my kitchen counter.

Looking forward to all of the knowledge and hopefully great food.

Could a moderator please pm me? I made a post yesterday that said it needed to be approved. Just want to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my post because it has not been posted.

That happens with all new members. It's just the moderators having a quick look to make sure you haven't signed up to spam the forum. Welcome.

Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I will have some time to do a little craigslisting to find some of my components tomorrow.

When people ask me how much we've spent to grow-out a trout, I'm kind of embarrassed to tell them. Suffice to say, it isn't low cost. It is the most fun hobby I have taken up in all my years of researching and learning fun new sustainable projects. That is what it is all about for me. Fun and entertaining too!

My goals are to do this as extremely frugally as possible. I have one big thing going for me that my mother gave me her entire soil based growing set up that includes a ton of lights. My roommate is also a plumber, so that makes those materials cheap or even free. Everything else that I need I will buy used, with a coupon or barter for it.

Of course I will have the electrical costs, but since my lighting is all led that should be low.

Time will tell how much I actually end up spending, but I am going about it as budget minded as possible.

Hey Nater, where in the mitten are you at? I'm just a bit south of Lansing.
