Hi, I'm a newbie to the world of aquaponics having found out about by accident when googling information on aquaculture. I am now a keen convert and hope to set up my own system when we move to our new smallholding in France later this year. :wave:

I have a question - as soil is a factor in how grown food tastes - does it mean that there is much difference in the taste of fruit and veg grown in an aquaponic system as opposed to a soil system? :think:

Hi JackieC, welcome to the forum :wave:

You'll find a pretty wide range of opinions on that question. It's a lot like regular gardening that way :thumbright: .

Judging by what I've read here and elsewhere, most people will say that most things taste better grown in aquaponics - they seem to get especially excited about strawberries. Some people complain that their leafy greens taste bitter if the system has high nitrate levels, but others say they don't have that problem.

Me personally, speaking as a newbie, I've found that my lettuce and basil are awesome and grow like weeds, my button squash was delicious, and I can't tell whether my strawberries are any better than the ones grown in the dirt, but I don't care because I can actually eat them myself instead of regarding them as tiny vegetative sacrifices to the gods of birds and slugs! If nothing else, the fact that everything's going to be incredibly fresh has to be a good thing. :thumbright:
