Hi my name is Tassie Pete,

I am deadly serious about starting a commercial Aquaponics operation in Tasmania.

I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has tried to do this before, on a commercial scale, in Tasmania Australia?

This is going to sound a little rude, but we get a good chunk of people coming in here saying a similar thing, and we repeat the same thing over and over again (I've been meaning to make a video of that).

But the gist of it is:

Have a search on here for commercial. You'll get masses of information.

To make any money, or compete with the big boys, you need size. To get a big AP system (and by big, I mean something that can pump out 80T of produce a year), you need to spend a lot of money on pumps, generators, monitoring systems, greenhouses, and that stuff adds up very quickly. And you need to have that capital to get going.

And the easiest part of the job is growing it, the hardest part is selling it, because supermarkets want to buy it for nothing, and farmers markets mostly want to buy it cheaper.

But that said, check out Ryan Chattersons thread, he seems to be making a go of it, but is putting in masses of work. And I don't know of any AP commercial systems in Tassie.

Thanks for your response "Colum Black-Byron". This is my first time using a blog of any description.

I visited a small scale AP in Northern NSW some months ago that was doing fine. I know they have a bigger market place but AP makes some much sense it would be a shame to just drop the idea because you have to compete with the big guys. We have a unique market place down here in Tassie and we do Niche markets and produce very well, because of the size of our population.

The main issue I am having here in Tassie is the bureaucracy that is so restrictive in protecting those big boys, ie; Aquaculture industry.

Nether the less I am going to soldier on, and try to make a success of it.

I live in northern NSW. Would be interested to see a small scale commercial system. Are you able to share details of whereabouts or contact details?

No argument there... have noted various exotic fruits and other delights in your backyard - but all as a result of you having gone back to the dark side - digging in soil

I've heard various rumours of someone in the hills around Mullumbimby with a semi-commercial system. But all the leafy greens I see in local farmer's markets turn out to be hydroponic.

maybe that rumoured system is one of the many secret things happening in the hills up that way :wink:

I live in Tassy , and let me tell you don’t waist your money. The government make it way to hard for a small player,unless you have a couple of mill,, to invest , you wont even be allowed to keep edible fish, they are all front about small business, just remember how this place started, all the farmers were given the land by the English royals, and that attitude still exists down here. As a very learned friend once told me. Tassy is a experiment in poverty and how far you can push people before they leave.
