hello all, I'm new to aquaponics and have built a small 4 tier plastic shelf and a 5 gallon fish tank into a small scale system for my first attempt. the system has 4 small gold fish, and is set to run for a half hour every other hour. I started out by growing lettuce, I broadcasted the seeds into the hydroton, and they took to it very well growing to about 3 inches and then all of a sudden they almost all died out. I know growing depth will become an issue eventually but that shouldn't have effected it for the size they were. I'm starting to wonder if it needs a bigger tank, between the plants and evaporation I'm having to add about a gallon of water every 2 days. the fish are healthy, the rocks are some sort of smooth gray river rock, I don't think the water is getting to hot, but ill throw a thermometer in it to find out. any information would be helpful. thank you Denver |
