Hi All,
I've been growing fruit and veg in my garden in North Yorkshire, UK, for the last 2 1/2 years and I've had a 2 level pond in for roughly the last year (see photos). I was reluctant to add fish to the pond as I wanted to encourage wildlife, especially amphibians. However 1 year on and with plenty of native plant life (all in pots/baskets) the wildlife is prolific and the frogs have had a wild time in both the upper (250lire) and lower (1100litre) ponds.
So my next step is to add some fish to the lower pond (planning shabumkins, weather loach and possibly common goldfish) when the water warms up (end of april where I am). So ideally I can have amphibian survivors in the top pond and those in the bottom will have to fend for themselves!
Anyway, It didn't take much research into the fish species that were right for my pond before I came across aquaponics and as luck would have it, I have small spare areas of ground at both the top and bottom of my pond setup that I'm pretty sure could be developed into aquaponics areas (I'm an engineer by education and trade and probably also by birth! Anything's possible).
So this is just a 'quick' welcome from me. I'll probably be quiet for a while whilst I digest as much info as I can but after that I'll try and keep my 'newbie' questions to a minimum to get me on my way.
I've added a few of the only photos I have right now of my pond and they're all from pre-construction/completion. Obviously it looks rather different now with established plant life and a decking cap to the concrete retaining slabs. I'll post more in my own threads as appropriate. Comments/newbie suggestions welcome.
Jonathan.
(The first pre-construction pic shows possible aquaponics ares, at the top behind the brick wall to the right of the picture, and at the bottom in the raised area to the very front left of the picture. I appreciate the images don't give the best overview but I will add more.)
