Hello - Josh from southern california here.

I can't seem to find any degree type programs that are specifically designed to give a holistic understanding of aquaponics - the building, science, operations, research, etc

I don't see the value in paying to do a 1-3 day seminar to teach me - I want to have a deep understanding.

Is anyone aware of any formal educational opportunities akin to a degree/certificate program that they would recommend to get started in this industry?

Do a course in Aquaculture/hydroponics/bio-engineering. I don't believe there are any formal training in just AP.

Unfortunately like a lot of things there is a lot of bad information out there so Im glad you stopped in here before you forked out money for something that wouldn't give you what your after.

There is a lot of great information here on the forum, from a range of people from all over the world and real life experiences. We always recommend browsing the 'IBC of aquaponics' for a lot of the basic information surrounding aquaponics.

Another good recommendation is to build or buy a small system and learn from there for a year or two. You usually find yourself expanding a small system and adding different types of components to advance your knowledge. Using the forum you will get the answers to all your questions.

There is also a lot of good books around, search the forum here for recommendations.

The only Aquaponics course I would recommend is by Ryan from Chatterson Farms but Im unsure if he is anywhere near you as he is in Florida.

Other than that any studies in Aquaculture would help. Theres no such thing as a degree in Aquaponics but if you have experience in aquaculture and horticulture it would greatly help in advancing your knowledge around aquaponics.
