Hello,

After lurking on this forum for quite a while I've decided to register and pursue this aquaponic gardening idea a bit more aggressively.

As the title indicates, I am in the high desert climate of Northern Nevada in the USA. Originally from Europe, I have only lived here for about 4 years but I am interested in improving the quality of food that my wife and I consume and learn more about the general ecosystem. She is very much into healthy foods and ditto lifestyle so my hope is that she will be on board with this once the first crops start to develop.

Hopefully I can learn a lot and pay it forward at some point, I am not looking at this from the commercial angle although I have to admit that idea is still somewhat intriguing.

My lack of hands on knowledge of electrical or plumbing work will surely prove to be an additional challenge but with the helpful folks from this forum I am confident those challenge can be conquered.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Hi and I am from the desert also. The low desert of Bullhead City Az. I have had systems before we moved here but now I am faced with temps during the summer months of 110 to 120 F. I have just started to research how to keep the water temp low enough to do a system here. I hope there is someone out there that has a fix for that!

Hey, I am close, in Wikieup. Evaporative cooling is the obvious one, are you thinking enclosed, like a greenhouse?
Also, containerised water acting as a heat sink can do wonders.Significant volumes of water will absorb heat during the day, and then release it at nite.
For instance, make the North wall out of containers of water. On the outside of the wall, have insulating panels you can remove.During summer, leave them off, so heat radiates to outside at nite.
During winter, add insulation so heat absorbed during day is radiated back into greenhouse at nite.
Earth bearming is also something to look at. Jim
