Hello all! My name is Justin, and I work for a non-profit in the Houston area. We recently bought a bunch of land which we hope to make self-sufficient, and we are going to begin aquaponics operations in a few weeks. I have virtually no experience raising fish, and exactly no experience in aquaponics, but I will be in charge of the aquaponics unit for the farm. I could really use some guidance from some experienced individuals, especially if they are in the Houston/Fort Bend County area. Does anyone know of an aquaponics group in the area that I could get plugged in to? My boss is already negotiating for three containers (is there a standard size of container?) of tilapia, and one of duckweed, even though we have no system in place. We are hoping to get a greenhouse donated in the next couple of weeks. Thanks a bunch, Justin |

Welcome to the forum Justin but the project you are involved in sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Actually not waiting at all. |

I agree! After communicating with her further, it seems we may be getting an entire AP system, but she doesn't know any details, including when we would get the fish. We are taking a field trip to the seller on Monday. I have been doing a lot of self-education over the past few weeks (mainly centered around Bright Agrotech podcasts and videos), so I explained to my boss that, best case scenario without a mature system, we could have a fish fry fundraiser. I have found the Bright Agrotech material very informative and thorough for a beginner, and highly recommend it. Does anyone have any other resources that they have found especially useful? |
