Post subject:  Hello from New Port Richey

I am new to this. I have a carport next to my garage I would like to use as the platform. It is 12x30.75 x 12 feet high. My wife and I are working together to try and obtain the knowledge to make this happen.

I would like to have a tiered system to utilize the height of the carport.
Being in florida, I don't know what material to enclose the area and lots of other questions about DIY stuff.

We have a list of what we would like to grow, but I need to understand how to raise all the plants on the list. I see lots of people let the roots just grow in the water and some that are in a bed.

I know I was very general, but any pointers is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum brokenjacko. This might be a good place to start (download the pdf of the IBC's of Aquaponics) - http://ibcofaquaponics.com/

You can grow most plants in AP.

Growing Power in Milwaukee uses a tiered system - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Growing_Power

The system where you are seeing the roots only is probably a Deep Water Culture system (DWC). At least part of the filtration for DWC is happening outside the plant growing area (usually with a solids filter and a biofilter of some sort between the exit from the fish tank and the entrance to the DWC bed). The other systems are media bed based. The media helps support the plants and filter the water and depending on the fish stocking to grow bed ratio, you can run it either with or without additional filtration.
