Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure out how I should go about the next few steps in the Aquaponics process:

1) I have been laser focused on making two systems within the next year. I would like to build a mini system in my room, and an IBC system (just build the system).

Or

2) I would like to spend More time leading about ratios, formulas, and explore any strong research and findings have been done on successful monitored conditions that support the production of all bacteria within the Nitrogen cycle.

What I am asking is: should I just go ahead and do trial and error; using this blog as a troubleshooting tool, or should I exhaust as much information as I can, using this as a forum to collect all the information necessary to start out prepared for a successful system?

How would you recommend I use this forum?

I recently started on my "small" test system after studying all things I felt related to barrel systems.
I started with a list; 1) keep it simple Stupid
2) list what I require from my design, then study it.
A) A barrel system: cut barrels for a stand were No Joy after watching 2 completely different ways (NOT Rule #1) I figured the hights each piece needed to be, stacked blocks and layed a 4x4 across. simple (Bonus 2 extra beds by NOT wasting a barrel for stands)
B) Expandable: Hoses and fittings instead of permanent PVC pipe. Plastic or nylon, not metal of any sort.
C) Portable: had to cut round growbeds, (not longways laying down) to move on trailer with 2 wheeler?
D) Solar Powered: No Inverters for 110v , just simple 12 volts dc.
Only a partial list and it took months to finish.

My eventual system will be IBC tanks as well. That's why portability was required, so I can keep the grow beds intact and plug into the new system.
I say start on the small system as soon as you can get the major parts together. Mine has been running for 2 days and the amount of info has been unlimited. That's just circulating plain water, no fish, plants and no grow bed media yet. I know most things work well (Flow rates, SLO) one or 2 need attention(battery capacity), some things will be addressed through the course of progression (insulation, etc.)
Real world tangible experience, with your system and circumstances, cannot be matched. Try what you feel comfy with and ask plenty of questions to keep you on track. Good Luck !
