Working to setup my first backyard aquaponics system using an IBC with some expanded shale media. So far I've prepared the IBC by cutting it and painting it to retard photo degradation. I've purchased a syphon and pump and am in the process of loading media into the grow bed. Trying to decide what type of fish to use. I was thinking of using hybrid catfish because of the temperature issues with tilapia. I spoke with a fish farmer on Saturday though who raises channel and hybrid catfish in several huge ponds, and he recommended the tilapia for aquaponics. So now I don't know what to do. I'd also considered wild caught perch just to get started and keep the initial cost down. I don't have a green house. My IBC will be on our back patio, but in the winter it can get below freezing here. Thoughts and suggestions regarding fish would be very much appreciated. I started with a 330 gal. IBC so my fish tank is actually too large for my grow bed but I don't need to grow too many fish. Hope to get to know you all and share ideas!!!! Marilyn |
