I'm a longtime lurker and dipped my toes in the AP waters last spring drawing heavily on what I read here in BYAP! I've broken down that smaller proof of concept system and have just gotten my '2.0' system cycled. You might also call it my "ambition over good sense" system as I've thrown caution to the wind trying multiple growing techniques (media bed, dwc raft, buckets, zip grow towers), broken more than a couple AP guidelines (as evidenced by my struggling tomato plants), and am attempting to run it all on standalone solar, just to throw in one more variable. Despite the disasterous forshadowing, things seem to be developing well (albeit slowly) with my biggest problem currently being a war with earwigs who are chewing up my lettuce and strawberry leaves!

Welcome to the forum Sugiman. Having all those different setups is a good way to learn. I've got some of those Earwigs running around here and they make pretty good fish food if you can catch them (least my Bluegills seem to like them) |

Wow, ambitious set up! Earwigs, heh...I accidentally found a good way to trap the little bast*rds. I left a natural bristle broom outside, bristles down against the wood chips that make up the 'lawn'. It was there maybe three days before I grabbed it to sweep inside. The second I touched it down to the floor, it freaking exploded with earwigs. Looked like something from a horror movie. Since then I've used it to gather up a bunch and shake them out into the fish tank. Bluegill certainly do appreciate them! |

I'll have to try the broom trap - sounds promising! |
