Thanks for the welcome...  As for fish well i thought it this as a learning system and i set it up for my sister. I put 4 goldfish fish in thinking well iv`e read how they have a good chance of dieing when the cycling thing happens. She has a small fishtank that needed cleaning so told her to dump the water in which will help start it. All good. Planted it out and stood back. Found out the next day she liked it sooo much she had ordered 25 jade perch over the net and they will be here in a week!!!!!!! As of now the plants are going well just have to deal with the wind. The fish welll 1 gold fish dead and i think 16 jades have pasted on. The rest seem ok for the moment and as its abit on the cold side i dont think they`ll outgrow the tank for a bit. Planing on a ibc setup once she decides where to put it. oh and as theres alot more fish than planed i put an air stone in.

revbryce, Melbourne is a bit too cold for Jade Perch here's a bit of information from South East Queensland Fish. http://www.seqfish.com.au/aquaponics_17.html Jade Perch Jade Perch make excellent candidates for Aquaponics. They are hardy, grow fast and taste good on the plate. Jade Perch have the highest level of Omega 3 oils in any seafood available in Australia. (CSIRO, 1998). Jades readily accept pellets and do well on a low protein, high fibre diet. They are aggressive feeders, and care should be taken to ensure that all the fish in the tank get fed, not just the dominant fish in the population. This will help to ensure even growth. Jade Perch perform best in water 6.5-8.0 pH, nil ammonia, hardness >80ppm, and temperature 18-32C. Jades are one of the better growth performers in aquaculture- they can obtain a plate size of 500g in under 12 months (in SE Queensland), if conditions are suitable. Plate size in 18 months is more common and would be what is expected for most aquaponic systems. They can grow to 50cm and 8kg! The biggest issue with Jade Perch is temperature. Jades stop metabolizing food at water temperatures below 18C, and will start to show stress at 16C, and death at prolonged periods below 14C. During winter, it is important to keep water temperatures above 16C. Jades are susceptible to common diseases that affect most cultured fish, but bacterial and fungal problems are most prevalent in the cooler temperatures, and ectoparasites during the spring and autumn. Most of these health issues can be avoided if water quality is kept at a optimum level and water temperature is maintained above 22C. |

Yep bit cold for a small outside setup. The jades were a long term plan latter on when a greenhouse and larger system are built. Sis kinda got carried away. Hoping to have jades in a big system with some sort of solar setup for temp control but thats still in planing. The way i have to look at them now is if any survive to get into the larger system they going to be very tough fish. Maybe good for breeding stock...

@revbryce - Hi and welcome. @joblow - I am interested in swapping over to Jade Perch as well, just curious how much is it going for in Aus? I found one supplier here that is doing 5-7 dollar my currency per 3-4inch fish. Do you know of anyone/information that manage/on how to breed them? @revbryce - Sorry for the hijack. Regards |

Regards[/quote] Jade Perch would be far better suited for Malaysia than Melbourne, here are some prices here in Australia, I'm not sure how your Ringgit compares to the AUD these days it was half to our dollar the last time I was in Malaysia. http://www.ausyfish.com/fingerling-prices.html http://www.seqfish.com.au/2.html I think shipping costs and quarantine would be a problem for you to import them and it might be best to buy them in Malaysia. |

@joblow - Aus dollar is stronger, i think it is currently about 2-3 times my currency. So 1 Aus dollar will be around 2-3 RM. Thanks for the links, it turns out about the same with conversion. How long has it been your last visit to Malaysia? Which state did you end up visiting? Regards |

Curious it's 20 years since I've been there, I worked out of Penang and K.L. for 10 weeks and later on 4 of us based ourselves in Penang and travelled in and out of there for 3 months travelling to Indonesia and Thailand. I enjoyed Penang better than K.L. |

@joblow - Yeah i know the feeling. 1st and 3rd Job was in KL, always found the 1st excuse to return to Penang. It has developed somewhat since your visit, more cafe scene and world heritage status. Thou traffic here on weekends are horrendous now. Regards |
