Hey how's it going

I'm Nick, I'm married with 3 kids and we've just bought a house down here so I finally get to set up an AP. YEAH!
I just thought I would start of small to see how it all goes and that way if anything goes wrong it won't be to big a drama. I'm FIFO as well so hopefully nothing goes wrong when I'm away. I'm trying to get the kids interested but we'll see what happens.
There's a small pond in the backyard which even had 2 goldfish in it when we bought the house which was a surprise as the water was green and there wasn't even a pump. I've lined a brick planter box with black plastic, put in a small solar pump I bought on ebay and moved the goldfish into there, they've been in there for a few weeks now with out any dramas so it's time to progress.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions for all of you and I'll make sure to post plenty of pics

Cheers
Nick

Well I've bought some gravel and some small plastic planter boxes, pump, pvc and retic fittings and made some small GBs a couple of weeks ago and transplanted some strawberries from the backyard. They seem to have survived and even seem to be growing. The 2 goldfish have survived and seem really happy so we went out and bought 4 barra fingerlings from golden ponds last Saturday.
They seem happy after a day and are even eating(when they beat the goldfish to the food) that will probably change when they get bigger.
I'll try put some pics up
Cheers
Nick

Water lilies are taking off
I don't know if that's good or bad
I guess they will give the fish shelter and it means the system is healthy

The strawberries are definitely growing new leaves and the kids can't wait for the actual strawberries

The barra are only tiny I don't know if they will grow out to plate size before it gets to cold but there's only 1 way to find out.

Great forum by the way
I've been reading/searching through some of the threads and found it to be a very fun, helpful and supportive community
Lots of good ideas

I've just bought a bug zapper to try reduce the mozzies and feed the little barra at the same time
Let's see what happens
Cheers

Well all 4 of the barra fingerling are gone

I noticed 1 of the barra had bulging and cloudy eyes when I was feeding them in the morning the day before I flew out
I did a bit of a search on here and came up with ich
From what I could work out they were getting stressed because of low water temps or from coming from GPs or a combination
So I caught them put them in an esky in the house with salted water and a aquarium pump to see if that would help them
Unfortunately I had to fly out the next day and the mrs said they just died 1 a day over the next few days
Very disappointing

That's not good at all. I'm sorry to hear it :-(
Maybe silver perch might be a better option to deal with this funky weather we've had this year, they can handle a much wider range of temps.
Troutman is sold out I believe, but there's a chap in Gidgegannup who still has some. I cannot for the life of me remember his name right now, but I'm sure someone else will chime in. I am planning on getting some perch from him shortly.

Ye I was thinking silvers and marron

On a positive the 2 original goldfish that were in there are still going strong and all the plants are thriving
The strawberries are starting to fruit but done of their leaves are looking very pale
Does anyone know what that means

Hi katmac I think I've seen the add for gidge on gumtree it's just a bit of a drive

Hi mat that delivery next week could be the way to go cheers

Hi everyone

What's the best way to transport and introduce new fish into my system?
I just want to give them the best chance of survival, should I put them in a salt bath as soon as I get them home no matter where I get them from or just slows add water from my system into the esky for them to get used to overnight?
Cheers
Nick
