Hi all, im new to the Aquaponics scene, live in ararat vic and have a keen interest in all things fishy, gardeny and environmental. Im in the process of setting up my first system, a CHIFT PIST style constantly flooded system incorporating a 1100l polymaster tank, x2 bathtubs and an ibc split in two as grow beds this should give me approx 1527l of grow beds if my calculations are correct. a 350l sump and 5000 lph submersible pump to see things moving in a recirculating motion. all plumbing is 50mm dwv (gravity side) with 25mm pressure pipe used for the pressure side of things. I will be using 7mm scoria as grow bed media and will be stocking murray cod, i have currently a cod in one of my fish tanks inside which i have raised from a fingerling, and is where the want to grow cod in my ap system originates from. Murray cod to me are one of the true wonders of the fish world, and deserve more attention and respect than they recieve currently imho. I have kept aquarium species for many a year, breed rosy barb and Guppys as feeder species, which i sell to aquarium stores locally. i plan on setting up a second tank off my ap eventually as a grow out tank for my barb fry once the initial system is fully established and i feel i have a good handle on things.
I will be keeping my cod as live feeders, i dont like the idea of keeping cod fed on pellets, but im sure there are many advantages in relation to nutrients ect which people may state. but im a believer in the fact that if they were bred to kill, let them kill.
i have been contemplating using a spray bar under pressure from my pump to fish tank to assist in aeration, but am unsure as to what dimensions to make the bar (length hole dia ect) to ensure no extra load is placed on the pump that wouldnt be there if the bar wasnt. any suggestion tips from fellow members greatly appreciated.
Also, is there many members on here from western victoria ?, namley west of Ballarat ? im located in Ararat and would love to see any systems that are operating locally.
Well thats my intro, hope to have many rewarding conversations with you all and look foward to tapping into the years of experience which seems to flow here.
Jarrod.
