Looking to get started in this hobby. I have grown a lot of plants and kept aquariums for the past 10 years. Now it's time to combine both hobbies to create one super hobby to rule them all. My first setup will be on a well supported balcony. The tanks size will be approximately 30 to 50 gallons and I am planning on building a free standing vertical gallon. I am expecting to get 4-8 of sunlight a day depending on the time of year. |

sounds like your all set. Just one question are the plants protected from the elements (high winds, extreme sun and same for the fish)? |

High winds are not really a concern for San Diego. Though it is the only city on the west coast of the continental United States to get hit by a hurricane. That was in the 1850s... Extreme sun is another story. I don't worry about it though. |

Yea... It will all be located on a balcony. Very protected from winds, even minor winds. The aquarium will not get extreme sun. Actually, it will never get any direct sunlifht. Some of the plants may get a few hours of direct sun. I'm not sure what the difference between extreme sun and direct sunlight is.... |
