Hi,

I very recently found out about the fascinating world of aquaponics, and I'm now trying to gather enough information to one day set up our own system.

Thank you so much for this great website and forum.

Julia

JULIA,

Find a ten gal tank, a couple of cheap gold fish, and a piece of syrofoam to float on top.
plant a few pretty flowers in the foam and let the roots hang in the water. Also an airstone.

Don't clean it too often; let nature find it's own balance.

Your fish may die and your plants may wither a time or two, but each time you will learn
wheather you know it or not. But each time they will last longer and thrive better.

And within ayear you will have gained the knowledge to expand

Never be afraid to fail; but always observe why it failed. And learn, that is how wisdom comes.

And don't be afraid to intintionaly abuse your system...just to see what it will do.
After a while, everything that you do to you system will be so instinctual that you won't even have to
think about it

Read all the books and forums you want, But until your fingers are dirty, you do not KNOW.

LOVE IT, DO IT, BE IT.....Daucie

Ok, here's a few random first questions...
I don't have so much time to read (being mum of small baby), so I'm hoping for some direct answers...

Watertemperature: If the water if the right temperature for, say, Tilapis, is it not to warm for plants?

If I want to breed fish (for example Tilapia), how do I do it, seperate tank? Less crowded? Can you tell male female fish apart?

Powercuts. How serious are they, i.e. how long can the average system survive?

How about a different ratio: more water, less fish, less plants? (I'm thinking of a pond system.)

Which plants do well on rafts?

Has anyone tried to grow Comfrey? (raft or medium)

Thank you.
