| Post subject: | Aquaponic system in a greenhouse |
Hi all, I have been reading every bit of literature online that I can find regarding aquaponics. I finally decided to get started. I am going to be making an IBS system with two grow beds above the tank. I want to put it all in a greenhouse. My concern is the fish? Has anyone had experience with the system in a greenhouse and am I headed for a huge disaster? The greenhouse will have a semi clear plastic film over it and I am located in Melbourne so the weather here is never predictable and can get very hot in summer. Thanks and any information is appreciated. |

The most important thing will be choosing the right fish for your climate… fish only tolerate a certain range of temperature and will get sickness or die if the temps go outside or to the extremes of that range. Also adding oxygen to the water is important especially as your temperatures rise… the warmer the water the less oxygen it is able to hold.. This is a link to a fish supplier I get my fish from in Brisbane http://www.seqfish.com.au/aquaponics_17.html It has a bit of information about common fish for AP and their requirements… may help you a little |

Hi. I am in Melbourne ( the outskirts) and have my setup in a greenhouse. I have 2 IBC fish tanks and 6 grow beds in the greenhouse and the sump outside. All seems to be going ok, has been up and running for 6 months now. Still seeing good growth in the plants and fish seem ok. Silver perch have gone very quiet with the drop in temperature but added 10 trout I picked from Macclesfield a few weeks back and they are eating really well. We lose direct sun from about now till early spring so will have to see how the system winters. Trout and perch are in separate tanks I guess we will know more in a few months, so far so good Good luck |
