Hi,
My name is Peta and I am a new member living in Tassie.
Had my eye on Aquaponics for a few years but my hubby
is not convinced yet.We also have been trying to work out
what fish we will be allowed since Tassie is so strict?
Any Tassie members had luck with anything other
than Rainbow Trout?Which btw we have bought from
Inland Fisheries before for our dam but lost all but two
to the cormorants. Which incidentally had never been seen
on our rural property until the day after the fish were delivered?
So that was an expensive experiment!
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Peta and welcome to the forum.
There have been quite a few other members from Tassie on here over the years but seem to disappear after a while. Do a search and i am sure you will find some. One from down Hobart way grew out some Atlantic Salmon but most have done the Rainbow Trout. You could grow your trout in your aquaponics system for a year and then move them to your dam as by then they would be to big for the cormorants to eat.

Its my understanding that only triploid rainbow trout are allowed and only by approval from IFS, quite a hefty application fee and quite expensive trout to be bought off them, i believe $2.50 a fish. You can source trout from the two private hatcheries in the state i believe, but they wont be much cheaper, i believe the one down south is called snowy range fish farm. I have never dealt with them, i don't know if they bother with small retail sales like aquaponics.

Cormorants are very smart birds, they will follow any transporter to and from a farm site. The only solution is a bullet or netting over the pond that has to be pegged down at regular intervals, any weakness and they will go under it.

Have you thought about catching wild fish and using them in your system?

that also requires a permit from IFS i believe. They have very strict rules that seem mostly geared to keeping them in a job.
